One of the reasons I started growing flowers was to be able to fill my house with vases of flowers and to gather flowers to give to friends - it’s still my favourite thing to do and if you want to grow for a wedding next year I hope my bucket of just cut blooms gives you some ideas. I love the informal frothiness of them- very romantic under the rose arch. I think I’ll have to have a supper party under the roses this summer. Time to gather Love in the Mist. Nigella. Beautiful star like flowers and pretty buds. A florist favourite. It cuts easily and lasts in a vase. The flower is pollinated turns to stunning seed pods which can also be used fresh in bouquets and arrangements as well as cutting to dry. Pick garden roses early in the morning and condition them this way for a longer vase life and to help them take up water so the heads don’t wilt. Florists and flower farmers prepare the flowers for you. But this is a great tip for your own garden roses or any other woody stemmed flower or foliage. When you are arranging flowers always, always put them into a vase that is clean- clean enough that you could drink water out of it! I put my vases in the dishwasher. This was a first for me- a week in Catalonia on a Flower Farmer’s and Florist’s retreat. Clip shows our last day at the hotel and then exploring the ancient medieval Old Quarter of Girona where the local florists were preparing for the 70th flower show which opens on Saturday. We arrived at the hydrangea dressed steps of the Cathedral as the the bells rang out to announce the new Pope.
All week we had sessions with the legend Roz Chandler (@fieldgateflowers ) Ali Conway (@thegreatbritishflowerschool ) and Tom Coleman (@imtomcoleman) and various trips out. My favourite was joining Marin at her flower farm @hortadelaviola - so fabulous- we were invited to cut whatever we liked to arrange with so I couldn’t resist cutting an armful of rose Rununculus. As a team we then created this stunning table setting- cover pic by Sarah@goldenvalleymeadow
We stayed at a stunning private farmhouse hotel in Fonteta @masgenerosfonteta with a Chelsea designed flower garden full of charm and English garden roses. My style of flower arranging is what I call “English country garden style” - naturalistic, seasonal, a little wild and characterful. I just cant seem to follow “rules” of formality and stiffness. And we can all be creative with flowers - Just got to let it out!

I felt like an imposter for a long time when I started growing flowers. I didn’t know any other flower growers. So I joined Flowers from the Farm ( FFTF) and was so AMAZED to find there were so many flower farms in Shropshire. Loads! I then went to my first FFTF conference in Bristol- arriving on the station and honestly, the very first person I went up to ask the way was (I was rather in awe when I realised) Gill Hodgson MBE - yes the founder of FFtF! How amazing was that?!
The conference introduced me to so many growers- such inspiring stories and speakers and we were all talking flowers. My family need no longer have to listen to me 😆- I had flower friends! Shropshire growers are in the West Midlands regional group it’s very large so here in Bridgnorth area I thought I’d start a little What’s App group “ The Daisy Chain” just the 3 of us at first but now it’s 10 of us ! We meet for coffee, exchange field crop news, share out our spare plug plants and share or do bucket swaps of flowers sometimes. We pile in a car to regional meeting and conference. It’s a really nice, supportive and collaborative way to grow flowers and to know we can offer our customers fabulous bouquets and bunches of flowers all locally grown - err as “fresh as a daisy (chain)”- see what I did there 😉#shropshireflowers #britishflowers #englishgardenflowers #daisychains #flowerfarming #Bridgnorth #cutflowergarden

A big hello from me, Lisa Holt at Gate House Florals in Shropshire, as this week I have the privilege of hosting The Flowers from the Farm account after Caroline from The Hidden Garden Blooms did so brilliantly last week.
A bit about todays post- as you can see, my tentative 3 beds (9 metres) of flowers which I started with about 4 years ago soon grew and although I have more beds now, I am still a very small scale flower farm, which is why I prefer to call it a cutting garden. My aim is to be productive with this space. It has to be manageable so I keep the love for growing and being creative with flowers. My aim is to grow enough to be self sufficient- having the enough flowers for my bouquets, funerals, workshops and dried flower projects.
In the rest of this weeks posts I’ll tell you why and how it all started (spoiler alert- totally it wasn’t in my plan 😂) and share some tips and lessons I’ve learnt from my fabulous support network of flower friends as well as whatI am up to next.

To watch them grow just unwrap your tulips, then trim the ends and place into a squeaky clean vase with water. Watch them grow. As far as I know they are the only flowers that do this- unless you know different - let me know. And if you are local pick up a bunch of my tulips at @beckburyshop shop or DM me to order for pick up or I’ll deliver locally too.

We couldn’t believe the neglect our little woodland had suffered. Fenced off. Black bin bags of domestic rubbish chucked, piled high and buried deep. Literally a mountain of rubbish - old furniture, lampshades, metres of old wire fencing, a table and 15 car tyres! Shocking. So we’ve been in a mission- working to remove the rubbish and restore it for the last 12 years. Slow and steady wins the race we hope. Lovely to see the native plants now coming through. After snowdrops, wild daffodils, wild garlic and bluebells. The wild flowers bathe in the dappled sunlight - no longer smothered by rubber, metal and plastic waste. The parrots are my favourite - from rather unattractive tight bud of petals they unfurl so beautifully revealing their frills and flamboyant petals. Some florists also sear the freshly cut stems in boiling water for 10 seconds. I’m having an unexpected wildlife week. I love wildlife- but not when they are in my garden or beds or poly tunnel eating my seeds, tubers and plant babies. I just opened up the poly tunnel to cut my first anenomies when I heard the rustling behind me … 🤨 It’s not as if we don’t have netting, fencing, chicken wire up- but they are crafty, clever blighters. Time to put a mesh against the polytunnel doors - wondering if this is a thing the polytunnel companies offer? Does anyone know?

It’s superb as a cut flower and foliage for flower arranging as it lasts so well out of water. I love its elegant white blooms. I use the fresh cut stems in my funeral flower arrangements then nestle in other garden grown foliage- pittisporum, rosemary and my own eucalyptus grown from seed. We have a number of these Vibernam standards that we planted ten years ago in our parterre garden under planted with stachys and white tulips.

Glorious weekend in the garden. Sunshine yellow in the sky and in our fields. Our daffodils grow wildly- doubles, pale lemons - we didn’t plant them but lucky for us someone else did. The temperatures are rising this week so I’m going to plant out some of my overwatered hardy annuals plants. The greenhouse is stuffed with snap dragons and larkspur but sadly not sweet peas because a mouse got in and ate them all! So tomorrow I’ll get planting to make room for more seed sowing - including another batch of sweet peas 🌱

I grew them for the first time last year as an experiment as I had heard how difficult the were to germinate and grow ( especially in our damp summers). Honestly they were easy!. My plugs came from @ameliasflowerfarm Amelia and Giles have clearly cracked the secret to germination as the plugs are so robust and cute. They grew well for me and looked amazing in bouquets and last weeks in the vase. A stunning cut flower. It all started this time last year with a call to action from Georgie @commonfarmflowers to flower growers to run a little plant sale and raise money for a local horticultural charity. After some research I found (to my embarrassment) that I lived only 3 miles away to a most wonderful charity that I didn’t know existed ( for 30+ years!)
The Albrighton Trust @albrightontrust support young people in the most beautiful location with gardens, classrooms, a moat and river.
So last year a group of us Bridgnorth flower growers (find us all on @flowersfromthefarm ) got together and ran a small plant sale of our seedlings and raised over £200. Well I couldn’t end it there- so the sale of my Christmas wreaths and workshops included a donation to The Albrighton Trust. It was lovely to hand that money over yesterday and pop in to see some of the students thoroughly enjoying learning to weave willow yesterday.
The Albrighton Trust have just been recognised by the King - last month they were awarded the prestigious Kings Award for Volunteers. Last year we secured the weed membrane in the Polytunnel so tightly that we now can’t get to the soil to amend it and improve it! Classic beginners mistake. So today we sorted it out by creating a section to lift it and easily peel it up.
Big tip- Always burn weed membrane - this prevents that awful plastic fraying happening. The soil will now have our homemade compost and local manure added to enrich it. Then we will secure the membrane back into place and planting into the holes. It works well to manage the weeds. #shropshireflowers #polytunnelgrowing

In midwinter it’s the dream of flowers to come that keeps me going. I already have young larkspur plants in the greenhouse growing slowly; they’ll be ready to be planted out as soon as spring begins. I’ve nurtured them through the cold so far- just a few more week til light and warmth returns. Can my flower seedlings survive the cold? I keep checking daily- often I’m too scared to go and check! All my plant babies are nestled under fleece. Because I worry so much about them Father Christmas brought me a greenhouse heater! I wasn’t going to get one myself but now I’m glad of it. I’m giving them the best chance to get through these sub zero temperatures.
In the meantime I’m collecting pretty twigs with catkins and buds to bring inside and potting up hyacinth bulbs for indoor displays. When the ground is frozen solid I can sort my seed packets and plan for sowing again soon.
I’m thinking of growing more herbs to include with the flowers. I already have rosemary, mint, dill and fennel. If you know any other great herbs that would be perfect in a bouquet let me know. Can my flower seedlings survive the cold? I keep checking daily- often I’m too scared to go and check! All my plant babies are nestled under fleece. Because I worry so much about them Father Christmas brought me a greenhouse heater! I wasn’t going to get one myself but now I’m glad of it. I’m giving them the best chance to get through these sub zero temperatures.
In the meantime I’m collecting pretty twigs with catkins and buds to bring inside and potting up hyacinth bulbs for indoor displays. When the ground is frozen solid I can sort my seed packets and plan for sowing again soon.
I’m thinking of growing more herbs to include with the flowers. I already have rosemary, mint, dill and fennel. If you know any other great herbs that would be perfect in a bouquet let me know. My family have put up with all my “good ideas” and helped me with deal with the challenges- rain, slugs, flooding and when the storms mangled my polytunnel I was so very grateful that my husband, sons and fabulous friends helped to install a new one ready for spring planting.
We’ve put in more flower beds, fencing, a cutting hedge, a dedicated dahlia bed. The jobs my family never applied for but do very willingly ( well with promise of tea and chocolate biscuits).
