Daffodil flower cutting tip. Cut to the length you want. Place in water and leave for 2 hours do the sap all comes out. Then the daffs are ready to arrange with other flowers. Glorious weekend in the garden. Sunshine yellow in the sky and in our fields. Our daffodils grow wildly- doubles, pale lemons - we didn’t plant them but lucky for us someone else did. That’s the joy of perennial bulbs. Good value blooms for years and years. It’s been a team effort to prep the cutting garden raised flower beds for planting after winter. The rock hard surfaces have been dug over, weeded and dressed with manure. The temperatures are rising this week so I’m going to plant out some of my overwatered hardy annuals plants. The greenhouse is stuffed with snap dragons and larkspur but sadly not sweet peas because a mouse got in and ate them all! So tomorrow I’ll get planting to make room for more seed sowing - including another batch of sweet peas 🌱

For wedding flowers and bouquets or if you want to grow your own wedding flowers for this summer then Lisianthus are stunning! I grew them for the first time last year as an experiment as I had heard how difficult the were to germinate and grow ( especially in our damp summers). Honestly they were easy!. My plugs came from @ameliasflowerfarm Amelia and Giles have clearly cracked the secret to germination as the plugs are so robust and cute. They grew well for me and looked amazing in bouquets and last weeks in the vase. A stunning cut flower. It all started this time last year with a call to action from Georgie @commonfarmflowers to flower growers to run a little plant sale and raise money for a local horticultural charity. After some research I found (to my embarrassment) that I lived only 3 miles away to a most wonderful charity that I didn’t know existed ( for 30+ years!)
The Albrighton Trust @albrightontrust support young people in the most beautiful location with gardens, classrooms, a moat and river.
So last year a group of us Bridgnorth flower growers (find us all on @flowersfromthefarm ) got together and ran a small plant sale of our seedlings and raised over £200. Well I couldn’t end it there- so the sale of my Christmas wreaths and workshops included a donation to The Albrighton Trust. It was lovely to hand that money over yesterday and pop in to see some of the students thoroughly enjoying learning to weave willow yesterday.
The Albrighton Trust have just been recognised by the King - last month they were awarded the prestigious Kings Award for Volunteers. Thank you for buying my flowers, wreaths and joining workshops and in doing so supporting these fantastic young people. I love English country garden flowers - scented, romantic so I’m thrilled the delphiniums, larkspur and cornflowers are all growing so well and desperate to go out. They will get planted out this week ( if it ever stops raining) I’ll put some in my cutting garden and some in the polytunnel. Keen to test the difference protection offers. Todays task digging in roses- on my visit to @eytongardens Hall last week I picked up some rose cuttings to propagate ( apparently you just put them straight into the soil out in the garden and wait for the magic to happen) My bare root Chandos Beauty roses have arrived so I’ll definitely have roses, and spires of delphiniums in my bouquets and arrangements. #shropshireflowers #englushcountrygarden #greenhousedays

If you’d like snapdragons this summer You can sow the seeds now ( they are tiny so use a toothpick to pick up). And later as seedlings use this snip/tip/dip technique to propagate more snapdragon plants and you’ll have a bounty of beautiful flowers THiS summer!

Last year we secured the weed membrane in the Polytunnel so tightly that we now can’t get to the soil to amend it and improve it! Classic beginners mistake. So today we sorted it out by creating a section to lift it and easily peel it up.
Big tip- Always burn weed membrane - this prevents that awful plastic fraying happening. The soil will now have our homemade compost and local manure added to enrich it. Then we will secure the membrane back into place and planting into the holes. It works well to manage the weeds. #shropshireflowers #polytunnelgrowing

I’ve been out with my Christmas secateurs today. I’ve always been a bit scared of pruning roses and shrubs. Today I learnt to cut and propagate with advice from Ann @eytongardens . Pruning class was followed with a fabulous lunch by Mandi @thegooseontheloose. The next class on Primulas and Auriculas is in March. 🪴#pruningseason #shropshiregardens

Our West Midlands regional meeting was in glorious sunshine today - kindly hosted by the new regional coordinator Rozanne at her farm in Ledbury. Great day spent meeting everyone and exchanging knowledge, ideas, plans and supporting each other. Flower buckets ready for my first cut flowers which will be tulips probably in April - maybe sooner - I go with whatever nature and the weather brings. Proper flower buckets- with handles! I’m ridiculously pleased with my purchase! I don’t suppose anyone else gets excited about such things… but do tell me if you do.

I will admit I was giddy with excitement at the conference yesterday! It’s an occasion where I go all silly “fan- girl” when I spot my top favourite growers in actual real life! I have learnt so much from them on their courses and reading their books. ☺️
So can you imagine a room packed with hundreds of UK flower growers all talking about …flowers! We normally all work alone in our fields and gardens so a chance to be together is really special. We are all member of @flowersfromthefarm. The conference was hosted by flower farming royalty & legend Georgie Newbery from @commonfarmflowers and the guest presenters and panels are all trailblazers of knowledge & experience in growing flowers:

Can my flower seedlings survive the cold? I keep checking daily- often I’m too scared to go and check! All my plant babies are nestled under fleece. Because I worry so much about them Father Christmas brought me a greenhouse heater! I wasn’t going to get one myself but now I’m glad of it. I’m giving them the best chance to get through these sub zero temperatures.
In the meantime I’m collecting pretty twigs with catkins and buds to bring inside and potting up hyacinth bulbs for indoor displays. When the ground is frozen solid I can sort my seed packets and plan for sowing again soon.
I’m thinking of growing more herbs to include with the flowers. I already have rosemary, mint, dill and fennel. If you know any other great herbs that would be perfect in a bouquet let me know.
