Join me to make a beautiful Christmas wreath here at Gate House Florals near Bridgnorth in Shropshire .The wood burners will be lit and it's going to be especially cosy, magical and festive. We will use a range of British grown winter evergreen foliage, dried flowers and seasonal flourishes to create a stunning sustainable door wreath. Yes you can have flowers next spring. Sow along with me for flowers in a raised bed, the garden or container next year. Buy some sweet pea seeds and Rununculus corms - they are on sale online at the moment. They like the cold (unlike me) and will thrive growing healthy roots over winter. Just keep them in a protected area so the frost doesn’t touch and damage their leaves.

No, not dead flowers to me. Everlasting summer flowers. Do you see the beauty, the form, the light? A spontaneous clip as I walked past the door of this room. The flickering autumn sunlight on the stems caught my eye. It stopped me in my tracks. Thought I’d share the moment. I’m usually (always) rushing around. A reminder to stop and notice the subtle shift in the season and today the last sunlight at this hour. The clocks go back tonight.

Is this a normal size mushroom / fungi to find in an English woodland? Is it bad sign ir a good sign? Please let me know what I should do - leave, remove, cook?

I’m not perfect (I know - you’re surprised! 😂) but I try to be as sustainable as I can in my flower arranging. So even at Christmas wreath time, I try to keep it local, seasonal and British. So foliage, fir cones, moss, dried flowers are all sourced locally from my garden, woods and my generous gardener neighbours ( with their permission) . They used to me eyeing up their hedge cuttings and pruning.
I used to dry my own orange slices too- oranges leftover from school Christingle services (the children always ate the sweets). Other decorative bits and bobs for wreaths, like ribbon can be reused and bases can be reused for Easter wreaths. I always use garden twine rather than wire. Maybe I should start a campaign for a “green Christmas” this year rather than a white one…

Here’s a very typical flower farming and floristry day for me is cutting and conditioning flowers early in the morning, then some bouquet making with the flowers that have been conditioning overnight. All my flowers for my florists and my bouquets are then loaded in the car and delivered.
After a quick lunch (my own homemade tomato soup yum!) and it’s on with my favourite dungarees- they keep me perfectly clean and dry when I am gardening. And lastly, a reel recoding interrupted by my flower farming right hand man (and gorgeous husband) - we spent the rest of the afternoon puttering in the garden getting jobs done outside before the light starts to go which is at around 18:35 now - which catches me out! Once the sun goes down it’s time to do some paperwork and a quick reel advertising my new wreath workshops - dried flower and Christmas! Do please join me - see dates on my reel and website. Gate House Florals is definitely a family business. Each summer and end of term , my best farm hand ( son number 2 ) comes home and he’s a very hands on flower farm hand usually digging, cutting doing deliveries of bouquets and taking photos of the flowers ( all the good ones) It’s been good fun as he has tried his hand at spiral hand tied too. But now it’s the end of September and back to university … until he’s back home again at the end of term - errr just in time to help plant the 1000 spring bulbs I’ve ordered! 😉😁

Knowing which dahlias will last the longest in the vase and which will not is the key difference between cutting and deadheading. By deadheading I will get more flowers growing right up to the first frosts AND I can see clearly the younger flower heads that will last the longest in a bouquet and in the vase.

Happy dahlia days. I am spending most early mornings and evenings cutting fresh stems of dahlias for blousy bouquets. Im also trying to keep up with deadheading - the key to keeping the flowers going well into October. The flowers have taken a bit of a bashing from the heavy rain but the grass is growing again which is wonderful to see. My plan is to keep putting bunches of flowers into the village shop for sale each Thursday and delivering to my subscribers until the first frosts. If you would like a blousy bunch of diva dahlias just message me - I can gift wrap too and delivery locally or come and collect. I always cut fresh to orders.

The day “Tower 42” became “Flower Power Tower 42!” Loved the mission to deliver a very special gift of my home grown cut flowers from the country lanes of Shropshire to the skyscrapers of the city of London this week. It was the most brilliant secret. Hiding in a coffee shop until the right time to meet up my son to hand the bouquet over. The flowers were to thank his mentor at the end of his year as an intern with the company. I was so pleased that the flowers held up so beautifully. I didn’t realise a ladybird was nestling in the petals and had done the whole trip to London too (and up 30 floors of Tower 42). My son’s colleagues had heard about us flower farming all year, had followed the posts and reels but today they actually got to see and smell the real thing! It’s fun to make a bouquet and spiral the stems. Honestly, have a go. Use a mix of foliage, grasses as well as different flowers to add interest and texture. Play and practise and this will help you to develop your own style. I like my bouquets to look like an English country garden because that’s where they grow. Tie your bouquet with string. For a long vase life always allow time to correctly condition freshly cut flowers. I strip stems of leaves as I cut so they are clean going into water to drink overnight. These are the stems laid out this morning. Making a bouquet is easy because I can pick up stems and spiral. I had the most wonderful day joining Syrie, Nick and the team @woodhillparkestate and @woodhillparkinteriors near Oswestry yesterday. Sustainability is at the heart of this new events venue near Oswestry, so I was thrilled to be asked to dress the tables for their champagne afternoon tea in the Jasmine Courtyard. I cut buckets of dahlias the evening before and arranged them into 40 used glass jam jars in water. When I cut dahlias I do sear them in boiling water to ensure maximum vase life. Dahlias are so vibrant and exciting, I generally let them take centre stage. I have lots of different varieties this year so they really added a fabulous pop of colour to the tables. Yes pampering! Anyone else do this? Every bloom grown by hand from seed in my greenhouse to cut flower in my cutting patch. They have had the very best- best compost, light, dark, moisture, sunshine, stroking, fertilising, watching, checking, protecting from wind, pests, cutting at the right time of day into a clean bucket of fresh water, conditioned, then wrapped gently in the best bio tissue and paper and kept cool and dark - just the way they like it. Achillea or Yarrow flower stems stay strong as they dry. This makes them easy to work with for dried flower or everlastings craft projects. I use them in my everlasting autumn & bridal wreaths and my dried flower bouquets. As a flower farmer and florist it’s a bonus to have two uses from one flower. It’s perennial too so a really hard working plant.
They dry quickly and although the colours fade naturally, they are still beautiful - you’ll see in winter when everywhere is monochrome - they provide a pop of colour in the grey days. I like to include thoughtful and meaningful touches in my funeral & sympathy flowers. Nearly all my families choose funeral flowers that can be shared at the end of the funeral service. I’ve got the blues… a bucket full of the blue flower kind. Delphiniums and scabious fama are the most stunning perennials to grow. Larkspur are the annual delphinium family. They all seem to enjoy growing in my sandy soil which is very exciting ( or is that just me 😃)

Time to gather Love in the Mist. Nigella. Beautiful star like flowers and pretty buds. A florist favourite. It cuts easily and lasts in a vase. The flower is pollinated turns to stunning seed pods which can also be used fresh in bouquets and arrangements as well as cutting to dry. Pick garden roses early in the morning and condition them this way for a longer vase life and to help them take up water so the heads don’t wilt. Florists and flower farmers prepare the flowers for you. But this is a great tip for your own garden roses or any other woody stemmed flower or foliage. When you are arranging flowers always, always put them into a vase that is clean- clean enough that you could drink water out of it! I put my vases in the dishwasher. This is how I find myself in Catalonia this week visiting the most beautiful flower farm @hortadelaviol to cut, gather and arrange with the most stunning flowers, in the most stunning setting. Lead by Ali and Roz from @thegreatbritishflowerschool and Tom from @imtomcoleman for lessons in floristry, photography, socials and more- yoga, cookery, pottery. So glad I said “Yes” and didn’t let my worries about travelling on my own to a remote place stop me. My strategy - connect with others and do it together. My style of flower arranging is what I call “English country garden style” - naturalistic, seasonal, a little wild and characterful. I just cant seem to follow “rules” of formality and stiffness. And we can all be creative with flowers - Just got to let it out!
I’m trying to be as sustainable as possible in all my bouquets, farewell flowers, events and workshops. but it is tricky. I’m not perfect. I’ve learnt the key to arranging flowers sustainably, without single use plastic and foam, is to play, experiment and problem solve. Exchanging ideas with growers and florists, researchers and product developers is interesting and I’m enjoying learning more about the global flower trade. I felt like an imposter for a long time when I started growing flowers. I didn’t know any other flower growers. So I joined Flowers from the Farm ( FFTF) and was so AMAZED to find there were so many flower farms in Shropshire. Loads! I then went to my first FFTF conference in Bristol- arriving on the station and honestly, the very first person I went up to ask the way was (I was rather in awe when I realised) Gill Hodgson MBE - yes the founder of FFtF! How amazing was that?!
The conference introduced me to so many growers- such inspiring stories and speakers and we were all talking flowers. My family need no longer have to listen to me 😆- I had flower friends! Shropshire growers are in the West Midlands regional group it’s very large so here in Bridgnorth area I thought I’d start a little What’s App group “ The Daisy Chain” just the 3 of us at first but now it’s 10 of us ! We meet for coffee, exchange field crop news, share out our spare plug plants and share or do bucket swaps of flowers sometimes. We pile in a car to regional meeting and conference. A big hello from me, Lisa Holt at Gate House Florals in Shropshire, as this week I have the privilege of hosting The Flowers from the Farm account after Caroline from The Hidden Garden Blooms did so brilliantly last week.
A bit about todays post- as you can see, my tentative 3 beds (9 metres) of flowers which I started with about 4 years ago soon grew and although I have more beds now, I am still a very small scale flower farm, which is why I prefer to call it a cutting garden. My aim is to be productive with this space. It has to be manageable so I keep the love for growing and being creative with flowers. My aim is to grow enough to be self sufficient- having the enough flowers for my bouquets, funerals, workshops and dried flower projects.
In the rest of this weeks posts I’ll tell you why and how it all started (spoiler alert- totally it wasn’t in my plan 😂) and share some tips and lessons I’ve learnt from my fabulous support network of flower friends as well as whatI am up to next.

To watch them grow just unwrap your tulips, then trim the ends and place into a squeaky clean vase with water. Watch them grow. As far as I know they are the only flowers that do this- unless you know different - let me know. We couldn’t believe the neglect our little woodland had suffered. Fenced off. Black bin bags of domestic rubbish chucked, piled high and buried deep. Literally a mountain of rubbish - old furniture, lampshades, metres of old wire fencing, a table and 15 car tyres! Shocking. So we’ve been in a mission- working to remove the rubbish and restore it for the last 12 years. Slow and steady wins the race we hope. Lovely to see the native plants now coming through. After snowdrops, wild daffodils, wild garlic and bluebells. The wild flowers bathe in the dappled sunlight - no longer smothered by rubber, metal and plastic waste. I love making natural wreaths. Dainty spring plants, twisted willow and stems from the garden. The hellebores are now pollinated so last out of water. The little narcissi are in water tubes which can be reused. The plants can be uncut from the base and planted out. Everything is totally natural and compostable or reusable. Specialist tulips now coming up in my cutting beds. The parrots are my favourite - from rather unattractive tight bud of petals they unfurl so beautifully revealing their frills and flamboyant petals. Have vases of hellebores that do not flop by using these 2 florist tips. Flowers will easily last 7 days or more in a vase and can even be revived after flopping by using the scoring technique. Some florists also sear the freshly cut stems in boiling water for 10 seconds.
